SAN JOSE, California
- March 16, 1999 -
Fujitsu Software Corporation announced today the availability of Fujitsu
COBOL Version 4.2 for Windows 95/98/NT. This release provides extensive
enhancements to the PowerCOBOL GUI development environment, increased
compatibility with Micro Focus COBOL, and many detailed enhancements to
other components. Ron Langer, Senior Sales and Technical Support Manager of the Developer Tools Group at Fujitsu Software Corporation, said, "We've packed a lot into this point release and have had extremely positive feedback from our beta customers. PowerCOBOL continues to move forward at an exciting pace with new and enhanced features such as toolbars, pop-up menus, tooltips, and improved ActiveX control support; we've even reduced the size of the average project file by 60%." After attending the PowerCOBOL Boot Camp, Roy Bradley, Manager, Information Technology, Worldwide Customer Service and Support Division for Data General Corporation, commented, "PowerCOBOL allows me to move my legacy systems, using my COBOL development staff, to state-of-the-art Microsoft technology, including development around the Microsoft Distributed Network Architecture (DNA). I can move off proprietary mainframe systems to a three-tier or 'n' tier architecture, without a large investment in new development. PowerCOBOL allows me to use Microsoft tools once only available to Visual C++ or Visual Basic programmers to accomplish this goal." Increased Micro Focus Compatibility COBOL language enhancements include 78-level constants and CBL_ subroutines - features popular with Micro Focus programmers. Together with the recently announced Micro Focus Dialect Converter product, Fujitsu now has an attractive package for Micro Focus customers who want to take advantage of Fujitsu COBOL's speed, reliability and FREE run-times. No Run-time License Fees Fujitsu Software Corporation continues to offer hassle-free run-time distribution. The 4.2 release includes an "installation wrapper" that provides a single installation package for the customer's application with run-time support for all the component products. Fast, Reliable COBOL Feedback from customers and beta testers confirms that Fujitsu COBOL has outstanding performance and reliability. More Features, More Information Ron Langer concludes, "Current Fujitsu COBOL users will want to take advantage of the additional features and information provided in this update. For example, we have added information to help people through more involved tasks such as ODBC integration. "Fujitsu COBOL Version 4.2 demonstrates Fujitsu's commitment to providing a continually improving, high-quality, high-performance product. Beginning with Fujitsu COBOL Version 3.0, released in 1997, and illustrated most successfully with Fujitsu COBOL Version 4.0, released in 1998, Fujitsu has provided significant feature and performance enhancements in each new release. "Users with maintenance agreements will receive the update automatically and at no additional cost. Non-maintenance customers will find the upgrade prices a worthwhile investment for the benefits this update provides."
