Fujitsu Software Corporation announces Fujitsu COBOL for Microsoft Windows 2000

Fujitsu COBOL's seamless integration with Microsoft tools and technologies gives Windows 2000 enterprise customers fast, effective solutions.

San Jose, September 13, 1999 — Fujitsu Software Corporation announced today that Fujitsu COBOL for Windows 2000 would be available when Windows 2000 is released. The leading Windows-focused products, Fujitsu COBOL and PowerCOBOL, will comply with the recommendations of the Windows 2000 Application Specification.

Tod Nielsen, Vice President Developer Marketing of Microsoft Corp. said, "In developing Windows 2000, Microsoft has had a strong focus on the enterprise customer, so we are excited that we have a long-standing relationship with Fujitsu, a leader in the COBOL industry. We know that Fujitsu's experience in the high-performance, mission-critical business application market, combined with Fujitsu COBOL's solid reputation for integrating with Microsoft tools and technologies, will be an important ingredient for Windows 2000 enterprise customers."

Dr. Fred Horowitz, the founder of Affiliated Network Systems in Chicago, is already realizing the benefits of integrating Fujitsu COBOL with Microsoft. "Fujitsu COBOL enabled us to give patients accurate information about their insurance coverage by delivering real time insurance information to dentist's offices via the Web, " said Dr. Horowitz. "Our application developers, who are experienced COBOL programmers, recommended Fujitsu COBOL because of its stability and tight integration with our chosen environment - Microsoft Windows. Using Fujitsu COBOL they were able to deliver a reliable, sophisticated application on the Microsoft platform in a very short time. With this product, our business is growing rapidly so we are going to benefit greatly from the scalability and load-balancing features of Windows 2000. By announcing Windows 2000 support, Fujitsu Software Corporation puts us where we need to be."

Windows 2000 provides customers with the means to create better applications - better installation, better in-field maintenance, better growth strategies, better interface management, more data access routes, such as ADO and OLEDB. With the rapid growth of the Internet, existing applications are being moved to Web servers or new applications are being created there. Customers need a reliable platform that lets them grow as quickly as their market demands. That's what the combination of features in Windows 2000 and the function and stability of Fujitsu COBOL provide.

"Our existing customers will be pleased to see many useful enhancements in addition to the Windows 2000 enabling," said Ron Langer, COBOL Group Manager at Fujitsu Software Corporation. "There are more controls, properties, events and methods in PowerCOBOL, 'Dr. Watson'-like trouble shooting information provided on abends, and distributed object environment (CORBA/DCOM) support, to name but a few. This will be another significant release for serious application developers."
