Fujitsu Software Corporation Announces New COBOL with Cutting-Edge Capabilities

New features strengthen Fujitsu COBOL's commitment to providing seamless integration with Microsoft tools and technologies, including Windows 2000.

San Jose, January 31, 2000 — Fujitsu Software Corporation today announced that Fujitsu COBOL 5.0, which provides users with significant new Web, COM and MTS features, will begin shipping in March 2000. Fujitsu COBOL is a strong and steadily evolving, Windows-focused product that offers a robust development path into the future.

Fujitsu COBOL 5.0's new features ensure compatibility with the latest Microsoft offerings, including Windows 2000. The core technology, together with add -on features and products, provides the integration and new interfaces that developers need to ensure business success in technologies such as the Internet.

"Fujitsu COBOL 5.0 continues our track of making COBOL one of the key languages that integrates with any of Microsoft's technologies," said Ron Langer, COBOL Group Manager for Fujitsu Software Corporation.

Invented 41 years ago to provide a programming environment that helped business users create powerful applications, COBOL continues to meet and exceed the business application demands of the 21st century.

"COBOL has withstood the test of time and continues to be recognized for its reliability," said Mr. Langer. "We have built on that legacy with Fujitsu COBOL 5.0 by delivering unparalleled features that enable developers to leverage their COBOL skills to meet the business demands of the new millennium."

The new features include: COBOL code for multi-threaded applications, which makes it more efficient for multiple users of certain Web architectures to access sites simultaneously; an event-tracking log for Windows NT; abend-monitoring, including just-in-time debugging; and a high level interface that brings ISAPI programming for Microsoft Web applications easily within reach of all COBOL programmers.

Also included in Fujitsu COBOL 5.0 are: a COM Interface routine enabling COBOL code to work as COM objects that can come under the control of utilities such as MTS; execution enhancements for code running on Pentium® machines; and double-sided printing for standard print reports.

Fujitsu COBOL 5.0 and PowerCOBOL can both be used to port existing legacy COBOL applications to the PC environment. These applications often perform better in this environment, freeing mainframes and midrange systems for other tasks. In addition, Fujitsu COBOL systems are easily adaptable to the Internet platform, with minimal changes. The programming language's longevity and durability ensures that such Internet integration projects are achievable by IT departments that use COBOL systems. As a result, COBOL will play a vital role in the E-commerce revolution by providing the support systems that are required by all businesses. The Fujitsu COBOL 5.0 product is available in three packages: Standard, Professional and Enterprise.
