San
Jose, Calif., August 8, 2000 --Fujitsu
Software Corporation, a leading supplier of COBOL compilers and tools,
today announced the general availability of its Dialect Converter services
for ICOBOL users.
The Dialect Converter for ICOBOL integrates
with the Fujitsu COBOL compiler for Microsoft Windows so that any necessary
syntax conversions can be performed at compile time. The Dialect Converter
for ICOBOL is also used when it’s time to make the transition to developing
solely in Fujitsu COBOL. ICOBOL sources are converted into Fujitsu COBOL
compatible sources.
Because of the tight integration between
the converter and the Fujitsu compiler, developers can continue developing
in ICOBOL syntax, but can compile their programs with both ICOBOL and
Fujitsu COBOL compilers. Releases can continue to be made using ICOBOL
until all the parallel testing with Fujitsu COBOL has been completed.
Fujitsu's beta customer, Health Data Services
(HDS) of Highland Heights, Ohio, is already realizing great improvements
in ease of application installation, speed of execution and ease of GUI
integration that are expected to yield significant cost savings.
"Our partnership with Fujitsu has been a great experience for us. Our
whole organization - from developers to field support to company management
- are excited at the results we are seeing as we roll out the Fujitsu
COBOL builds of our products," said Ray DelBrocco, Vice President and
General Manager of HDS, "Installations are proceeding without interruption,
customers are seeing vastly improved performance, and the Crystal Reports
integration promises to revolutionize the ad-hoc report generation side
of our business. Fujitsu has been highly responsive to our needs and has
consistently worked to understand our problems and make us successful."
The converter is offered with consulting
services to ensure that migration projects are successful.
"ICOBOL is a compiler with a lot of useful
extensions for the PC application developer. We have worked hard to bring
together the technology and personnel that ensures we can help companies,
that have taken advantage of these extensions, make a successful move
to Fujitsu COBOL," said Ron Langer, Director of COBOL Sales and Marketing
for Fujitsu Software Corporation. "Fujitsu COBOL is clearly the leader
in the marketplace today and we want to make sure that strong COBOL development
companies, such as HDS, can continue to reap the benefits from their investment
in COBOL."
George Wiley, Manager of Research and Development
at HDS said he has been particularly impressed by the responsiveness of
the Fujitsu Software migration team and their willingness to work out
creative solutions to all of their challenges. "We've found the Dialect
Processor and the Fujitsu COBOL compiler to be extremely solid products,"
said Wiley. "I'm particularly excited by the performance gains. For example,
some reporting applications are running in 3 to 4 minutes when they previously
took more than an hour. PowerCOBOL has been a bonus to us - giving us
integrated GUI's without having to learn a new language."
