San Jose, April 30, 2002 - Affiliated Network Services (ANS) of Chicago, which delivers real time insurance information to dentist's offices via the web, is among the first companies to migrate to Fujitsu Software Corporation's NetCOBOL for .NET, a compiler and rich development environment for COBOL built for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework. As a result, dentists who use ANSLink®, ANS' flagship product, can immediately provide patients with information about insurance benefits and coverage for specific procedures. "When I founded ANS in 1997, our application developers chose Fujitsu's COBOL development platform because of its stability, unparalleled support and tight integration with our chosen environment - Microsoft Windows," said Dr. Fred Horowitz, chairman and CEO, ANS. "Now, rapid growth is our biggest challenge and we need to adopt the latest technology so we can handle larger numbers of users. With NetCOBOL for .NET, we will have the ability to support our anticipated growth to 15,000 dental offices, processing 28 million claims in the next 12 months." NetCOBOL for .NET allows companies with existing COBOL assets to recompile their COBOL85 programs and enhance them using the wealth of technologies available in the Microsoft .NET Framework. The ability to compile existing code enables a clear migration path for businesses wanting to move to a platform that can deliver the kind of cost savings and technological innovation necessary to give them a competitive edge. "By using these latest tools from Fujitsu and Microsoft, we're able to deliver a product to our users that goes way beyond anything we could have imagined just a year ago," said Jordan Fifer, chief technology officer, ANS. "With Fujitsu's NetCOBOL, we've been able to take current COBOL applications and migrate them to the latest and greatest technology quickly and efficiently." The Microsoft .NET platform supports an unprecedented level of integration between a variety of languages and technologies. NetCOBOL for .NET also takes advantage of the Microsoft .NET Framework's strengths in developing XML Web services, making it easier for COBOL programmers to expose their code as components. "I'm a dentist, not a computer whiz, but I can tell you that ANSLink makes everything in my office run more smoothly and efficiently," said Dr. Henry Lotsof, DDS. "It makes life easier for me, my staff and my patients." NetCOBOL for .NET includes a new compiler targeting the Microsoft .NET Framework common language runtime, support for ASP.NET and XML Web services, and integration with the Visual Studio .NET integrated development environment. The released product also includes preliminary support for the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Windows Forms designer, which supports a rich drag and drop design-time experience for developing rich client user interfaces using COBOL. "At Fujitsu, we're committed to language integration as a strategic component of the Microsoft .NET Framework. Tight integration with .NET allows COBOL programmers to take advantage of the significant investment Microsoft has made in making the .NET platform scaleable," said Dr. Basim Kadhim, chief architect, languages, Fujitsu Software Corporation. "As the only COBOL compiler vendor to provide direct support for the Microsoft .NET platform, Fujitsu is excited about exploring even greater opportunities for our products and our customers."
