San Jose, CA, November
13, 2002 - Using Fujitsu NetCOBOL for Linux, DB-NET, a developer of
specialized accounting systems for distributors, has saved money and improved
performance at Scioto Valve and Fitting, a Worthington, Ohio distributor.
The migration involved a hardware upgrade and move from Micro Focus COBOL
on UNIXWare to Fujitsu NetCOBOL for Linux on RedHat Linux 7.3. DB-NET
accomplished this move over a weekend.
Mike DeLauder, president
of Scioto Valve and Fitting, describes the benefits his company has realized:
"We recently expanded our business by purchasing another distributorship
in West Virginia, and knew we had to upgrade our system. DB-NET proposed
the NetCOBOL/Linux solution based on a $2,500 server. We've grown to trust
DB-Net's judgment - easily confirmed when we are being recommended systems
of comparable functionality costing ten times as much. With the new system,
our two offices communicate reliably using VPN over DSL; our users can
switch easily between our accounting system, other software and the Internet;
and we have seen phenomenal (30-fold) improvements in the performance
of many transactions. For example, generating a detailed inventory list
used to take 30 minutes and you'd better not try to do anything else while
that was running. Now that process takes less than a minute."
"I sleep better
when I know I'm providing my customers with a cost-effective solution",
said Rick Hardman, Software Development Manager for DB-NET. "With
NetCOBOL for Linux I don't have to take money from my customers for run-time
charges, which is something I hate to do. Linux is a reliable and reasonably
priced solution and Fujitsu NetCOBOL does not charge run-times as other
COBOL vendors do. Another important factor has been the reliability of
the NetCOBOL compiler. In four years I've never had to deal with a bug
caused by the compiler, so I have been keen to see the Linux version.
I've written my applications to be portable so this type of migration
is easy and is proving to be a big benefit to both me and my customers."
DB-NET's application
provides a thin GUI client on Windows machines, communicating with the
guts of the application on the Linux server. Locally machines use standard
100Mbps Ethernet connections. Remote locations use the same architecture
with a Virtual Private Network connection on a DSL line. The application
comprises hundreds of COBOL modules that are compiled and executed using
Fujitsu NetCOBOL for Linux.
