At the opening of Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC)
2003, Fujitsu Software Corporation announced that its NetCOBOL for
.NET compiler will produce code that can be used with Microsoft SQL
Server “Yukon” server-side procedures. This is an important
development because:
- COBOL stored
procedures developed on IBM mainframes can now be migrated to
Microsoft SQL Server (increasing the number of applications that
can be migrated with potentially huge cost savings)
- Verifiable
code gives database administrators the ability to ensure procedures
are safe to use
- NetCOBOL’s
embedded SQL support will work with ADO.NET providing a familiar
programming model for working with Microsoft .NET Framework database
access.

administrators need to know that stored procedures will not crash
the database system, or inadvertently corrupt data, through unsafe
coding practices. This release is going to make it clear to people
why ‘verifiable’ is a big deal.”
Many legacy
mainframe applications use stored procedures within IBM DB2 that
combine embedded SQL (ESQL) with COBOL to achieve more complex results
than are available with standard database accesses. Experienced
COBOL programmers are familiar with this technique as well as the
ESQL language. Mapping ESQL to ADO.NET, a feature unique to NetCOBOL
among languages, and making this available in stored procedures,
opens up new avenues for companies with mainframe COBOL applications
using the familiar techniques. Microsoft and Fujitsu Software are
demonstrating that commodity hardware can perform competitively
in areas previously considered to be the realm of mainframes. With
the continuing enhancements to Visual Studio “Whidbey”,
migration becomes an increasingly attractive option.
Microsoft and
Fujitsu Software have already assisted companies in migrating their
applications off the mainframe using a combination of Fujitsu and
Microsoft products and services: NetCOBOL for .NET, NetKicks, SQL
Server and experienced consultants.
NetCOBOL for
.NET is the only released COBOL compiler that generates Microsoft
Intermediate Language. Fujitsu Software continues to forge ahead
in the Visual Studio .NET arena, providing the only serious option
for companies wanting to migrate or develop COBOL code for the .NET
Framework.
SQL Server “Yukon”
supports the use of .NET Framework code running in the database
including functions, triggers, complex user defined types and aggregates
as well as stored procedures; NetCOBOL can be used for each of these
elements.
