NetCOBOL™ for Windows V8.0 Adds Support for WOW64

Latest release of rock-solid compiler relied on by millions

Sunnyvale, October 26, 2005 - Fujitsu Software Corporation today announced the release of version 8 of its NetCOBOL for Windows product. The NetCOBOL compiler, used to create code that executes millions of business-critical applications each day, is being updated in the Windows environment with a number of detailed enhancements and tuning features, along with official support for executing applications on X64 chips (32-bit, x86, chips that have been extended to support some 64-bit addressing, such as AMD’s Opteron and Athlon, and Intel’s chips with EM64T – generally grouped using “X64”) using Microsoft’s WOW64 support for executing 32-bit applications. (Development continues on 32-bit versions of the Windows operating system.)

“NetCOBOL for Windows is a pretty mature and very stable product, so we’re pleased to be able to offer some interesting and useful enhancements to our customers who rely on it to keep their operations going,” said Ron Langer, VP of Global COBOL Sales, Fujitsu Software Corporation. “Support for WOW64 is a useful stepping stone for organizations that are starting to move to 64-bit servers, like Fujitsu’s PRIMERGY ranges; they can confidently move their 32-bit applications to these platforms and gradually upgrade them using a 64-bit compiler like our forthcoming NetCOBOL for .NET release.”

Some of the other features added to NetCOBOL for Windows V8 include:

  • New integer numeric data types designed to facilitate sharing integer numeric data with other languages;
  • Some common Micro Focus COBOL features added to help the steady stream of customers moving to NetCOBOL from Micro Focus COBOL;
  • Ability to check for parameter mismatches between called and calling programs (already a standard feature in the NetCOBOL for .NET product);
  • More detailed compiler listings;
  • Reporting COBOL program line numbers in run-time error messages
  • Sanitizing supported in the Web programming subroutines.
